You might think that hard hats have been around for a really long time but in the grand scheme of things they have only been around (in the way we recognize them) for about the last 100 years. Some of the first times that hard hats saw use were during the building of the Hoover Dam in 1931 and the building of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1933. Soon after these projects were completed, you could see hard hats at many different work sites.

We even have a specific organization called the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that requires that people wear hard hats if they are going to be working in an area that has the risk of head injury, if they are around falling or flying objects, or if they are at risk of electrical shocks or burns. This mandate came about in 2012 directly from OSHA. Now hard hats are one of the most common pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) around. OSHA has been mandating head protection since 1974.

The Makeup of a Hard Hat

There are actually five different parts to most
hard hats. Most people only think of the shell and the suspension when it comes to a hard hat but there is also a possible insulator, a brim, and extra PPE equipment that can be added to your hard hat to offer additional protection.

One of the most basic parts of your hard hat is the
outer shell. This part allows your hat to help deflect blows to your head. This is a great feature to have if you are working in an area that has falling debris. It is also the simplest concept to understand in a hard hat.

The second part of the hard hat is the
suspensionM, which is another feature that people will commonly think of when they think about a hard hat. This is more or less a shock absorber for your head. This gives you space between the head and the hard hat so that an impact can be cushioned.

Those of you who are working in or near anything electrical should have an insulator in your hard hat. This
insulator will protect you against any electrical shocks that may occur throughout the course of your day. You will still have to make sure you have a properly rated hard hat before you begin work for the day.

The fourth feature of the hard hat is one that most people don’t really think about, the
brim. The brim offers you protection from spills or liquids that might run into your eyes. It can also keep any splashes or spills from touching the scalp as well. It is a good idea to keep your hat forward facing as, obviously, if it is backwards the brim will be useless to you.

The final feature of a hard hat is the different
accessories that can be added to it to help ensure your safety even more. You can actually get a face shield to add to your hard hat that will protect your face and will mount directly onto your hard hat instead of having to put it on your head. This is so you don’t have to sacrifice the protection offered by the hard hat by putting the face shield under the hat.

Types of Hard Hats

You will need to make sure that whatever job you are doing, you are using the correct hard hat to get the job done safely. There are different types and classes of hard hat and you should be familiar with them in order to determine which hat you need.

Type I – protects from impacts directly above worker

Type II – protects the worker from blows to head from the side, front or back

Class E (Electrical) – protects the worker against 20,000 volts of electricity

Class G (General) – protects the worker against 2,200 volts of electricity

Class C (Conductive) – does NOT protect the worker against electric shock

Inspecting Your Hard Hat

You will need to make sure that you inspect your hard hat before each use. You will need to look at the shell of the hard hat and make sure that there are no cracks or breaks in the shell. There should be no discoloration or anything that appears abnormal. You should also check the suspension and make sure there are no breaks, frays, cracks, or loss of flexibility.
If you are wearing a hat that someone else has worn, you should make sure to ask them if any type of impact occurred while they were wearing the hat. If any of these things have happened to the hat you should not wear it, you should immediately get a new one to wear.

Misconceptions

Another factor to consider when considering the safety of a hard hat is the common misconceptions that people have about hard hats in general. Many people think that they can wear a baseball hat under their hard hat but that is not true. The idea of the suspension is to give you enough cushioning between your hat and your head. If you have a hat there then there is the possibility of that interfering with how the suspension works.

Other people think that a hard hat is built to outlive them. This is not the case and you are actually supposed to
replace the suspension in your hat once a year and replace the entire hat every five years.

The final misconception is that the prettier your helmet is the better. The truth of the matter is that chemicals that have been found in different stickers or adhesives used to decorate a helmet can damage the shell or even prevent you from seeing if there is something wrong with the hat. Keep it simple and wear your hat the way you get it, or ensure you are using the most up to date method of personalizing your hard hard.

Caring for Your Helmet

Safety glasses are imperative for workers who are in an environment where they run the risk of having objects hit their eyes. The American Optometric Association states that over 2,000 workers each day receive an eye injury, and that eye protection in jobs where these injuries can occur drastically reduce the chance of these problems.

Even microscopic dust and chemical particles that get into the air can cause intense pain and damage to the cornea of the eye. Even grease and oil can cause significant eye damage. Steam and radiation are also dangers that can be avoided with the correct eye safety equipment.

The two major reasons for eye injuries on the job are not wearing any kind of eye protection and wearing the wrong protection. At T.A.S.C.O., we aim to fix this for you and your business.

ANSI Safety Requirements Regarding Eye Protection

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is one organization that ensures that companies invest in the safety of their workers. ANSI has created a standard known as ANSI Z87.1, which covers safety glasses for employees. This standard is included in OSHA federal regulations. These rules deal with the safety and thickness of glasses.

OSHA’s regulations have a section focused on the requirements for eye and face protection. This standard is 1910.133. It states that employers are to make sure that each employee that needs safety glasses has them available at all times. It goes into deeper detail as it states that not only are they to be provided, but they need to have side protection either built into the glasses, or attached to them. These attachments are usually side clips or shields.

This standard also reiterates the requirement of the employer to provide safety eyewear that will fit over the prescription lenses of those employers who wear glasses and that the safety goggles must not negatively impact the wearer’s vision.

For employees who are not affected by flying objects, but may be affected by strong light or light beams, there is a clause in the standard that states they must have eyewear with appropriate shade to protect them from the effects.

Rules and Regulations

OSHA has a specific set of rules concerning protective eye gear/safety glasses. These regulations state that the employer has a responsibility to ensure that their employees have adequate and safe eye gear. It also states that those employees with prescription eyeglasses must have safety glasses that are safe and fit over their normal eyewear. According to OSHA, employers cannot be released from those responsibilities by having employees sign a waiver, and it is the responsibility of the employer to make sure that employees are wearing safety glasses.

The rules and regulations put forth by OSHA are detailed and leave no room for misinterpretation.

What’s disconcerting is that the majority of those hurt on the job are not even aware that eye protection is a requirement. This came from the employers not educating their crew and not providing safety gear as needed. In addition, many who do provide safety glasses did not ensure that their staff was wearing them and that the eye gear was properly fitting each individual. These cases have led to stricter rules and regulations involving protective eyewear in the workplace.

T.A.S.C.O. Offers a Wide Range of Safety Glasses

T.A.S.C.O. has a wide assortment of safety glasses on offer. We have glasses, goggles, and accessories.

Upon further investigation of safety glasses, the choices broaden to include such features as tinting and auto-darkening. The types run the gamut from bifocals to welding glasses, which are safety glasses with an added layer of protection to withstand the specific needs of welders.

There are options to be considered for frames and different lens reflections, as well as the thickness of lenses. The price can be just a few dollars or over forty dollars for the highest quality safety glasses. Of course, the top safety glasses to prevent workplace injuries depend on the industry in question.

Pyramex Safety Glasses

Radians Safety Glasses

Smith and Wesson Safety Glasses

Uvex Safety Glasses

We also sell safety goggles, accessories such as cleaning fluids and neck cords, side shields, storage dispensers, and storage bags – everything you and your workers need.

Focus on Eye Safety in 2018

Proper eyewear in the industrial workplaces reduces eye injuries by over 90 percent. Choosing a reputable manufacturer and researching new, stronger glasses can help your company’s safety reach a completely new level in 2018 and beyond.

The company needs to think about the needs of their employees and the line of work for which the eye gear will be worn. Comfort is another issue to think about, as you need employees to be able to wear the glasses without discomfort - discomfort that could distract the employee from doing a quality job and even cause more accidents due to a lack of focus. The product should have the American National Standards Institute’s Z87.1 stamp, which shows that the glasses are top quality.

OSHA also states that employers should educate their employees to the dangers they could face without proper eye gear. Each employee should receive a properly fitting pair of safety glasses and the correct fit should be checked individually.

It is Your Duty to Protect Your Workers’ Eyes

Knowing that eye gear can protect the safety of employees, and that there are federal regulations that insist that they are provided and used properly, there is little reason why an employer would not make sure that their employees has proper protection. In addition, considering that eye gear is so affordable, and would help employees avoid fines and charges, the fact that there are still over 2,000 eye injuries a day almost boggles the mind. Each employee should be aware of the dangers that may face them on the job and should insist on proper safety equipment.

With education and regulations combined, there will be a decrease in the number of employees who suffer with eye injuries; and as injuries decrease, we will see productivity and job satisfaction increase. Through combined education and responsibility, this is one problem that can be alleviated.

NFL Football fans are one of the hardest working groups of people in the world. From the high rises of New York to the ports of Los Angeles, millions of NFL fans earn their money the old-fashioned way - working with their hands. Like the NFL’s players, these hard workers know that protecting yourself so you can make it back to the job tomorrow is a big part of the “game” of life.

Anywhere you see old-fashioned hard work you will see hard hats. They are as critical to construction, maintenance, freight loading, and other jobs as they are to the men of the NFL. Hard hats have traditionally been a plain piece of personal protective equipment that most that are required to wear them would rather skip.

Now, there is a way to keep the hard hats on the teams in the field around the country! Making the hard hat an appreciated point of pride is the key and by adding officially licensed NFL markings and colors to their custom hard hat lineup, these organizations are ready to get hard hats off the bench and into prime time!

Safe, Comfortable, Secure

Why a custom hard hat? Our ratcheting or pin lock suspension systems guarantee your new hard hat will fit comfortably, securely, and safely. Hat sizes from 6.5 to eight are available in the standard product line. Because our standard line is widely accepted, we can offer replacement pin and ratchet suspension systems when you finally wear the original out.

Wearing a branded hard hat certainly does not mean that you have to compromise on safety. Each of the NFL-branded hard hats is certified to comply with OSHA requirements by fulfilling the requirements set forth in ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 type one class C, E, & G standards. Canadian requirements outlined in standard CSA Z94.1-2005 are also met by the construction of this protective equipment.

NFL licensed hard hats are ready for shipping without delay. Most orders ship within a single business day.

When the whole team is ready to purchase hard hats together, it is possible to save money! Buy at least three hard hats and the price of each is $1.00 less than the listed price. At least six hard hats that ship together will get $1.50 off the price of each. Buy 12 or more of these hard hats and get a $2.00 per hat discount! That is like buying 11 helmets and getting one free! NFL fans can’t afford to pass on this opportunity to team up for savings!

Your hands are your livelihood; protecting them while at work should be at the top of your to-do list. When the correct gloves are selected and worn, safety gloves can prevent life-changing injury from occurring. There is a wide range of safety gloves from which to choose. They can protect against environmental hazards, chemical exposure, excessive heat, biological waste, and they can help prevent puncture wounds.

Workers not only need gloves that allow them to work safely, but they also need gloves that allow for dexterity. The gloves need to fit properly otherwise they can lead to accidents on their own accord. Getting employees to be compliant in their use of safety gloves is also of importance.

Laws and Regulations

OSHA's general requirements for hand protection (1910.138) mandate that employers must select the appropriate hand protection for their employees that protect them from the hazards of the workplace. It puts the onus on the employer to ensure that employees are wearing their safety gloves at all times when it is appropriate.

Section 1910.138(b) states that the employer must make the right choice of
safety gloves based on an evaluation of the hazards in the particular workplace.

Safety Gloves Are Effective in Preventing Injuries

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, injuries to the fingers and hands account for more than 23% of all work-related injuries. Two interesting facts emerged in their recent study; the first being the vast majority of those injured were not wearing gloves, and second that many were wearing the wrong kind of gloves. Often workers who were injured were wearing gloves that were inappropriate for the tasks they were performing, or they were wearing gloves that didn’t fit correctly.

According to a recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) study, 70.9% of hand injuries could have been prevented had personal protective equipment (PPE) been used, specifically safety gloves.

It is the employer’s responsibility to supply and educate employees in the proper use of their safety gloves - when they must be used, how long they will last, and what is the proper glove for any particular job.

It is the employee’s responsibility to be compliant in the wearing of safety gloves, and in ensuring that the safety equipment in use is in good repair and fits properly.

Improving Compliance

One way to increase compliance is by making sure your workers have gloves that fit properly. A glove that fits well is much more likely to be used as it doesn’t interfere with daily duties. A loose glove makes tasks that require dexterity more difficult, and a poor fitting glove can also lead to blisters that makes wearing them painful. By measuring the circumference of your palm at its widest part with a tape measure you can get an accurate sizing of your hand. Most gloves come in sizes (XS) 6”-7”, (S) 7”-8”, (M) 8”9”, (L) 9”-10”, and (XL) 10”-11”.

Safety Glove Options

Disposable gloves - These are the most common type of gloves used. They are used mostly to protect workers in the medical field and are also used by food handlers. They also come in hypoallergenic varieties.

Fingerless gloves - These gloves come in a variety of materials and offer protection to the top of the hand and palm while still allowing for dexterity.

Cotton and fabric gloves - These offer very basic protection, and help to keep hands clean while protecting against abrasions. Being cotton they are not a good defense against rough or sharp materials. They can be reused but should be cleaned often.

Coated fabric gloves - These gloves offer protection from chemicals. They are used in laboratory settings and can be constructed to handle specific chemical compounds.

Rubber, plastic, or synthetic gloves - These gloves are used when working with solvents, oils, or other chemicals. They also reduce the risk posed by exposure to blood and other infectious agents.

Leather gloves - These are the types of gloves used by welders. The leather is resistant to heat and sparks. Leather gloves can help in the prevention of abrasions and cuts.

Aluminized gloves - These gloves are used in very high-temperature applications like welding, furnace, or foundry work. They offer reflective and insulating protection.

Kevlar gloves - These are multi-purpose gloves that are cut and abrasion preventative, and protect against both hot and cold.

Impact-resistant gloves - These are also called anti-impact gloves and they are designed to prevent crushing and pinch point injuries through extra padding along the back of the fingers.

Anti-vibration gloves - These gloves are worn by workers who use jackhammers, chainsaws, or pneumatic tools. These gloves prevent carpal tunnel syndrome by offering metacarpal protection and impact resistance.

Latex and rubber gloves – Protect against acids, salts, water solutions, alkalis, and ketones.

Neoprene gloves – Protect against gasoline, organic acids, alcohols, and hydraulic fluids.

Safety gloves also come with different types of gripping agents like rubber padding or rubber dots on the palm. Some gloves have reflective materials added so workers can be better seen at night. Gloves also have patched palms that are made of leather to protect the hands from puncture wounds.

Wearing the proper safety gloves can prevent workers from absorbing harmful chemical agents through their skin and protect against severe temperature changes. Safety gloves help to protect against accidental needle sticks and puncture wounds.

In a factory setting with sophisticated equipment, if a worker comes in direct contact with movable parts there is a good chance a worker might suffer the loss of their fingers or their hand. If one is working around any kind of industrial machinery, it is important that safety gloves are worn to prevent accidents from occurring. A hand injury is not only a devastating loss, but it comes with high medical costs. One way to mitigate this is by requiring all employees to wear safety gloves when it is appropriate.

Importance of Workplace Safety Products

Workplace injuries and disasters can cost employers millions of dollars in lost productivity, fines, workers’ compensation payouts, lawsuit settlements, increases in insurance premiums, and hospital bills. Therefore, a safe workplace emphasizes uniformity in safety standards, use of safety products, and safety equipment for construction sites, trucking, loading and unloading large payloads, heavy equipment operations, manufacturing sites and factories, and agricultural environments.

Safety products are constantly being updated through innovations in materials science, design, and technology. The latest generation of worker safety clothing and equipment emphasizes durability, fire-retardant protection, chemical spill protection, facial safety (e.g. eyes, nose, mouth, and ears), and electro-shock prevention.

Worker safety clothing and equipment produces good labor practices, improves worker morale, and increases productivity. When workers are confident that they are protected and safe from the unpredictability of their environment, they are more determined to get the job done right.

General Worker Safety Products

First aid products are some of the most popularly sold items at T.A.S.C.O. Properly set up first aid kits can reduce injuries and accidents. Workers trained in first aid are able to quickly respond to accidents and apply high-quality bandages, cardiopulmonary resuscitation tools, cardiac defibrillation equipment, and medicines.

First aid kits allow construction supervisor or site managers, tradesmen, employees, and contractors to remain vigilant against accidents, injuries, and disasters. Industrial first aid kits contain eye-cleaning tools and poison response instruments.

Hazardous materials at construction sites can cause both short-term and long-term injuries and bodily damage. Short-term injuries include concussion, bleeding, coughing, choking, internal wounds, or burns to the skin. Long-term injuries can result in cancer, disability, or loss of limbs. Therefore, having a proper first aid safety kit can reduce or eliminate the risk of long-term injuries from occurring and costing your business millions of dollars.

Worker injuries due to falling from high elevations remain one of the greatest sources of permanent disability and death at many construction and factory locations. Fall protection equipment and products offer construction workers, building technicians, factory workers, and cleaners the tools they need to secure themselves in fixed locations for extended periods of time. Some of the most common fall prevention equipment includes roof anchors and tethers, confined space systems, safety lanyards, shock absorbing lanyards, retractable lanyards, safety harnesses, tie off slings, self-retracting lifelines, and safety carabiners. When purchasing fall prevention products, make sure it meets the American National Standards Institute for industrial safety equipment. Subpar equipment can quickly deteriorate in quality or increase the risk of injury due to component failure.

Worker posture and their bodily joints are essential to protect due to their repetitive use, exhaustion, and risk of injury. Head, neck, hands, feet, back, arms, kneecaps, and the feet and ankles are some of the most vulnerable areas of the body due to their exposure to the environment and their relative flexibility. Ergonomics support devices are being fully recognized more than ever for their ability to prevent back and neck injury at busy construction or work sites. Long hours of standing, bending over, or kneeling down can dramatically and negatively affect the muscular and skeletal system causing worker fatigue, pain, or inflammation. Worker fatigue and pain can reduce worker performance and awareness of their actions, thus exponentially increasing the risk of a worksite injury or disaster.

Therefore, safety equipment that is focused on providing back supports, wrist supports, knee pads, lifting gloves for the hands, and anti-puncture gloves are essential for preventing ergonomic failure or serious injury to sensitive and vital body parts.

Hard hats or construction hats are now better designed, fitted, and custom-made based upon the needs of workers. Hard hat technology has significantly improved with the use of lighter weight materials that are more durable, stronger, and resistant to weathering.

Depending on the work environment, hard hats come in many shapes, styles, configurations, and accessories. Construction work or mining operation sites may require hard hats that are significantly different in material composition, design, and safety standards from workers in factories or at agricultural facilities. Aluminum and carbon fiber composite hard hats protect against falling debris and ricocheting materials. Full brim and jumbo size hard hats can reduce facial exposure to dust, debris, and dirt during construction jobs. Welding hats can prevent high-intensity light from injury the eyes and vision by preventing sparks and molten metals from burning the face and eyes. A variety of accessories exists to improve hard hat performance, such as face shields, helmet mounted LED flashlights, helmet-mounted cameras, and eye protection goggles.

Construction and factory sites often produce high decibel sound waves and resonant frequencies that can significantly injure hearing. Therefore, all construction sites should make it a priority to have disposable and non-disposable hearing protection products available to their workers in order to reduce injuries to the ears. Hearing protection products include earplugs, earmuffs, earplug dispensers, hearing bands, earplug stations, and noise canceling headphones. In addition, a safe worksite will include decibel measuring equipment, signs, and charts in order to warn workers about the potential dangers to hearing for remaining in the worksite unprotected.

High visibility clothing and accessories are essential for helping workers remain visible and identifiable in crowded or low-light workspaces. High visibility clothing comes in both reusable and disposable coveralls depending on worksite needs. Disposable clothing may be needed in construction sites with radioactive, chemical, or biological contaminants in the environment. To maintain high visibility, safety equipment designers have developed hard hat mesh covers, reflective stickers and patches, orange pop-up safety cones, safety flags and light signaling clothing, safety triangles, neck shields, sunshades, rolls of caution tape, red danger safety tape, industrial flashlights, and fluorescent safety sticks.

Respiration and inhalation safety are essential in toxic or debris-filled atmospheric environments. Respiration equipment can prevent lungs from being exposed hazardous particles by filtering out contaminants, tars, chemicals, radioactive dust, biologically contaminated soil, pesticides, fumigants, and other materials that can cause disease, cancer, or immediate injury or death.
