We even have a specific organization called the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that requires that people wear hard hats if they are going to be working in an area that has the risk of head injury, if they are around falling or flying objects, or if they are at risk of electrical shocks or burns. This mandate came about in 2012 directly from OSHA. Now hard hats are one of the most common pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) around. OSHA has been mandating head protection since 1974.

The Makeup of a Hard Hat

There are actually five different parts to most hard hats. Most people only think of the shell and the suspension when it comes to a hard hat but there is also a possible insulator, a brim, and extra PPE equipment that can be added to your hard hat to offer additional protection.

You will still have to make sure you have a properly rated hard hat before you begin work for the day.

The fourth feature of the hard hat is one that most people don’t really think about, the brim. The brim offers you protection from spills or liquids that might run into your eyes. It can also keep any splashes or spills from touching the scalp as well. It is a good idea to keep your hat forward facing as, obviously, if it is backwards the brim will be useless to you.

Types of Hard Hats

You will need to make sure that you inspect your hard hat before each use. You will need to look at the shell of the hard hat and make sure that there are no cracks or breaks in the shell. There should be no discoloration or anything that appears abnormal. You should also check the suspension and make sure there are no breaks, frays, cracks, or loss of flexibility. If you are wearing a hat that someone else has worn, you should make sure to ask them if any type of impact occurred while they were wearing the hat. If any of these things have happened to the hat you should not wear it, you should immediately get a new one to wear.

Misconceptions

Another factor to consider when considering the safety of a hard hat is the common misconceptions that people have about hard hats in general. Many people think that they can wear a baseball hat under their hard hat but that is not true. The idea of the suspension is to give you enough cushioning between your hat and your head. If you have a hat there then there is the possibility of that interfering with how the suspension works.

Other people think that a hard hat is built to outlive them. This is not the case and you are actually supposed to replace the suspension in your hat once a year and replace the entire hat every five years.

The final misconception is that the prettier your helmet is the better. The truth of the matter is that chemicals that have been found in different stickers or adhesives used to decorate a helmet can damage the shell or even prevent you from seeing if there is something wrong with the hat. ANSI Safety Requirements Regarding Eye Protection

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is one organization that ensures that companies invest in the safety of their workers. ANSI has created a standard known as ANSI Z87.1, which covers safety glasses for employees. This standard is included in OSHA federal regulations. These rules deal with the safety and thickness of glasses.

OSHA’s regulations have a section focused on the requirements for eye and face protection. This standard is 1910.133. It states that employers are to make sure that each employee that needs safety glasses has them available at all times. It goes into deeper detail as it states that not only are they to be provided, but they need to have side protection either built into the glasses, or attached to them. These attachments are usually side clips or shields.

This standard also reiterates the requirement of the employer to provide safety eyewear that will fit over the prescription lenses of those employers who wear glasses and that the safety goggles must not negatively impact the wearer’s vision.

For employees who are not affected by flying objects, but may be affected by strong light or light beams, there is a clause in the standard that states they must have eyewear with appropriate shade to protect them from the effects.

Rules and Regulations

OSHA has a specific set of rules concerning protective eye gear/safety glasses. These regulations state that the employer has a responsibility to ensure that their employees have adequate and safe eye gear. It also states that those employees with prescription eyeglasses must have safety glasses that are safe and fit over their normal eyewear. According to OSHA, employers cannot be released from those responsibilities by having employees sign a waiver, and it is the responsibility of the employer to make sure that employees are wearing safety glasses.

The rules and regulations put forth by OSHA are detailed and leave no room for misinterpretation.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, injuries to the fingers and hands account for more than 23% of all work-related injuries. Two interesting facts emerged in their recent study; the first being the vast majority of those injured were not wearing gloves, and second that many were wearing the wrong kind of gloves. Often workers who were injured were wearing gloves that were inappropriate for the tasks they were performing, or they were wearing gloves that didn’t fit correctly.

According to a recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) study, 70.9% of hand injuries could have been prevented had personal protective equipment (PPE) been used, specifically safety gloves.

• It is the employer’s responsibility to supply and educate employees in the proper use of their safety gloves - when they must be used, how long they will last, and what is the proper glove for any particular job.
• It is the employee’s responsibility to be compliant in the wearing of safety gloves, and in ensuring that the safety equipment in use is in good repair and fits properly.

Improving Compliance

One way to increase compliance is by making sure your workers have gloves that fit properly. A glove that fits well is much more likely to be used as it doesn’t interfere with daily duties. A loose glove makes tasks that require dexterity more difficult, and a poor fitting glove can also lead to blisters that makes wearing them painful. By measuring the circumference of your palm at its widest part with a tape measure you can get an accurate sizing of your hand.
